TACT Scotland

When TACT Scotland enters people's lives, we aim to make a positive difference. We have branches in Glasgow, Ayrshire, Argyll and Bute and offer a unique range of services supporting people to have fulfilled and interesting lives as part of the local communities.

Paul's story

After trying several support agencies, Paul came to TACT in early 2004. Although he didn't settle at first, he now describes himself as independent, sociable and most importantly, happy.

"I used to be constantly tired but had energy to burn and didn't realise everybody was there to support me in doing this. TACT staff helped me structure my week with an activity board; this was first step to being independent, which made me fell happy.

"I built-up a busy social life and started doing activities that made me tired. I eventually got a job with the local B&B through TACT, making breakfast. This felt different but good.

"In June I moved into my own flat in Connel with my staff team. This was a fantastic feeling, this is when I realised I could be independent. I automatically started doing a lot more for myself as I had more freedom.

"In August I started college going two days a week and got more hours at my job. I was busy but enjoyed it.

"It is now December and I feel very happy and independent. I work four mornings a week cooking, and attend college every Monday and Friday. I do my own cleaning, washing and cooking as well as going to the bank and shops myself.

"I feel a lot more confident and enjoy people's company more. I go on home visits for overnight stays behaving myself. I attend the gym and go swimming once a week and socialise with staff and other service users.

"Overall, I feel I have progressed very well with independence and socialising due to TACT and their support."

Services

In Glasgow, our staff team provides 24 hour support to 23 people. It is a large service where we are committed to being responsive to the aspirations of individuals, focusing on what they actually want and need. Our experienced team shows great commitment to the people it supports. As an innovative provider, TACT is establishing new ways to build and develop all of our relationships. Several of the people we support have re-established family relationships that have lain dormant for years.

Our services in Ayr continue to grow, with more and more people gaining access to our Outreach Service. For those people who lead busy lives, going to college, volunteering or attending other activities, this service allows them to get a few hours of support a week as and when it suits them - it's there when they need it and not when they don't. This highlights an important part of TACT's approach. We're there to complement people's lives, not to take over. Using the natural support of family and friends, we aim to ensure people receive the right support at the right time.

In Argyll and Bute, TACT has teams in Oban and Connel; all have achieved increased recognition through hard work and dedication. Here, TACT Scotland is also providing support to an individual who receives direct funding, rather than through Social Services.

The future is full of new challenges as we continue to move closer to the ideals of real empowerment of people. By adopting the TACT 'can do' attitude, we are sure to meet these challenges head-on.
